Americans are prioritizing this thing over having kids, saving for a house

Americans are prioritizing this thing over having kids, saving for a houseAmericans are prioritizing this thing over having kids, saving for a houseIt used to be that by the time we were 30, Americans were focused on settling down and having kids. But according to a new survey, our priorities are shifting as wanderlust takes hold.Flash Pack, a travel company for solo travelers in their 30s and 40s, surveyed 1,000 30- to 49-year-olds through third-party research firm Mortar about what matters to them. When asked to list their bucket list priorities, 28% cited traveling to a part of the world they hadnt visited - a larger percentage than those who considered getting married, working in a dream profession, owning a home or having children a priority.54% of respondents agreed that they would rather enjoy life and invest in experiences while still young enough to enjoy them than save for a house, Flash Pack found.People are also willing to spend big bucks on travel, while simultaneously questioning whether funneling major money into more traditional choices is the right move. 84% of respondents wouldnt hesitate to throw $4,000 at the trip of a lifetime, but 66% would balk at paying the average price for a wedding.Meanwhile, it seems 30- and 40-year-olds are changing how they travel. Though there may have been a time when it was considered taboo or sad to go somewhere alone, people are becoming more willing to be explorers or adventurers without a friend or companion. In fact, 31% of those surveyed plan to travel on their own in 2019.Some of the experiences travelers are itching to have Seeing the Northern Lights, staying on a private island, flying in a private jet, trying out an ice hotel, and climbing a mountain. All of those possibilities sound great, and not just for 30- or 40-year-olds. Were down for a flight on a private jet to a private island before heading to an ice hotel where we can watch the Northern Lights and maybe even climb a mountain. Where do we si gn up?

Follow your passionIf youre going to take the leap and start your own geschftlicher umgang, its going to take a lot of energy, time, and money. The best way to keep yourself motivated through the ups and downs is to do what really matters to you. Buying the fir st affordable business that comes available just because you want to become an entrepreneur is a recipe for disaster. If you take immense joy in building birdhouses or selling cookies, do your research and go all in. Theres no promise that it will work, but when you follow your passion you know youll give it your all.2. Do your researchOkay, now that you have decided what your passion is and how you want to pursue it, you need to do some research on how to start your own business. There are a lot of things to consider Who will your customers be? How will you get supplies? Does this type of business make a profit in your area or do you need to be strong zugnglich? Before you throw everything you have into your new business, you need to take an honest look to see if it is a viable idea. This is especially important if youre trying something new. If you are purchasing a franchise, there should be a lot of material ready for you from the parent company.Go beyond the books and talk to so meone who has started a business similar to what you want to do. What were their biggest issues starting out? Frequently, its the things you never thought of that can hold you up. Ask someone who knows and can help you start out clean.3. Develop a business planOnce youve run the numbers and youre confident that its a great idea, developing a business plan is the next step. A business plan is your blueprint for making your business successful. It lays out your business concept, how you fit into the marketplace, and the details of how your finances will work.Your business plan is essential if you are going to need investors or a bank loan because theyll want to see that you have thought things through. Even if you dont need financing, a business plan is a great way to understand how your new venture will succeed and what issues you could face.4. Have a one-year planFor most businesses, the first year is spent getting things up and running, from getting the proper documentation and lic enses from the government to finding your location (if needed). Even once you open your own business, its rare that a business hits the ground running. Its okay. Develop a plan for the goals that you would like to reach in your first year of business. Keep your sights optimistic, but realistic. Your inaugural year can be a dangerous one if you make mistakes. When December comes, you can assess your business plan and see if youre on the right track.5. Have a five-year plan and a 10-year planWhile survival might be a sufficient goal for year one, that cant be the situation for long. You need to think about where you want your business to be in five years and so on. Will you need a bigger space? Do you want a better location? Are you going to need to hire employees?Figure out just where you want this business to go and plot out your route to get there, step by step. Setting goals every five years helps you measure your success as an entrepreneur and as a business.6. Consider your time managementLets pause for a moment and remember the self in self-employed. When you work for a company, you might punch in and punch out its clear and simple. These are the hours you work the other time is yours.Thats not the case when you are an entrepreneur. When you are trying to build your passion into a lasting business, it can be easy to lose track of your time management and get sucked into your business 24/7. Think about your family. Consider your friends. What other obligations do you have in your life? Decide how much time you can spend working on your business and hire help if necessary.7. Hire cautiouslyFew things can sink a business faster than poor quality employees. Its always better to tough it out short-handed for a while than it is to hire haphazardly. Look over applicants credentials carefully, scope them out online to see if there are any red flags, and make sure that they can embrace your passion for your business. Remember, they could be the face of your busin ess when youre away, even for a day.Bringing in friends and family? Thats fine as long as everyone knows what is expected of them and how they will be compensated. But again, only bring them in if they can be a boon to your business. Never hire someone just because you are connected by blood or friendship. Also, you should know your legal obligations as an employer before you hire someone. It could affect your business in many ways.8. Understand how your taxes workIts easy to get caught up in the excitement of starting to work for yourself. The freedom, the fulfillment, and the feeling of building something can be intoxicating. But, like it or not, taxes will play a big part in your business. Break it down as thoroughly as you can and develop a plan to stay ahead of your taxes. If its more complicated than you want to handle, hire a pro to help you out. Theres no way to know too much about your tax obligations. The last thing you want is to get blind-sided by the IRS.9. Have an exit strategySo far it sounds like starting out working for yourself is a lot of tedious work. It can be. But, here comes the fun part. Think about your five and 10-year plan. Now imagine that everything goes extremely well. Your business soars and is successful beyond your imagination. CongratulationsNow what? Do you want to continue the business until you retire and pass it down to your children? Are you hoping to find someone suitable to take over and keep it going with your vision? What about a buyout? Theres nothing wrong with setting your price and deciding that when the time comes and someone makes an offer youll take it. You can take that money and start something new or just relax and retire early.Keep in mind how you want to leave your business and, if necessary, start working towards that end as early as you can in your business plan.If you dream of working for yourself, stop dreaming and start doing something about it. Millions of people have become entrepreneurs before you an d many have succeeded. Why cant you be the next one? The 6-Step Formula for Success That Youve Been Looking for Your Whole Life

The 6-Step Formula for Success That Youve Been Looking for Your Whole LifeThe 6-Step Formula for Success That Youve Been Looking for Your Whole LifeI was 21 when I first moved to the U.S. from Europe. I spoke only broken English, and had no idea what I wanted to do or even where I would live. My coping strategy was to focus on fitting in to this new culture. I observed how people shook hands, how they dressed, how they made small talk. And I took elendes- literal notes. What started as a social survival mechanism had turned into a real interest I was researching communications, psychology, and strategic planning. I was looking for a pattern. You might call what I found an algorithm, a formula that people use to achieve sustainable success. This algorithm can be replicated. It can be personalized. I call it E.N.G.A.G.E?- ?one, because thats how the acronym worked out, but also because the point of this secret formula is engaging your potential, your purpose, and the people around you. Its about spending more time on the things that really matter to you so that you get what you want out of both your personal and professional life.So What Exactly Is E.N.G.A.G.E?E.N.G.A.G.E is a six-step process for discovering what drives you and using it to succeed in your career. Many peoples careers stall because they see strategic, high-level thinking, like knowing what their purpose is or what values drive them, as a soft skill. They dont prioritize it. But that kind of thinkings exactly what enables entrepreneurs to launch successful startups, executives to get promoted, and politicians to be elected. You can progress in your career without following this model, sure. But youll eventually plateau. So, if youre looking to advance, try E.N.G.A.G.EE Explore Your MeaningA few years ago, Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer and a team of researchers put subjects in two flight simulators one realistic, one they were forewarned was broken. In the process, each group received an eye exam disguised as part of the simulation.Langers team found that subjects who flew in the realistic simulator showed a marked improvement in their vision. Langer concluded that pretending to be someone with good vision, like a fighter pilot, had made their vision palpably better. This study, and others conducted by Langer, suggests that the power of our minds is, well, actually mind-bending. What if you choose to think of yourself as creative- or confident? In my case, I decided to think of myself as someone who decides with absolute certainty. So, I wrote that phrase on a sticky note and kept copies on my desk at work and my fridge at home. Seeing that credo every day has enabled me to unconsciously make faster decisions.Think about what matters to you. If you arent aligned with your values, its easy to let limiting beliefs control you Im not smart enough I dont have the resources Im not in a creative environment. But the reality is you are the X factor in this formula. To get started, identify your top three core values, then define steps you can do each week to embody that value. You value creativity? Set 15 minutes aside to doodle. You love adventure? Visit one new place every week.N Narrow Your GoalsIf changing your mindset can have seemingly magical effects, so can setting goals. In 1961, when President John F. Kennedy announced that the U.S. would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade, many people thought it was impossible. But without Kennedys ambitious goal, its hard to know if Neil Armstrong wouldve set foot on the moon eight years later.Growing up in Europe, I always imagined myself living and working in New York City, so much so that when I was 18, I went to IKEA and bought a giant photo of the Manhattan skyline and hung it above my bed. That was my way of creating a visual goal that I could engage with every night before going to sleep.Multiple studies show that setting goals is itself a mini-algorithm for success. In 2010, researchers from Mc Gill University investigated whether a written goal-setting program could have positive effects for struggling students. Researchers found that, Compared with the control group, students who completed the goal-setting exercise experienced three benefits in the post-intervention semester (a) increased GPA, (b) higher probability of maintaining a full course load, and (c) reductions in self-reported negative affect.Set clear targets. Say them out loud. Write them down. Are your goals s.m.a.r.t- simple, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound? Remember, even more important than identifying your smart goals and writing them down is knowing the things that you will not do. Learn to say no. One key to achieving your goals is being selective with your time so that the bulk of your energy goes to what counts.G Generate a PlanAccording to Kellogg School of Management hochschulprofessor Lauren Rivera, managers tend to hire candidates they believe could become their friend. The hirin g process is not only about finding the person with the skills for the job, but also about the person who fits in with company culture. In other words, people trust people they perceive as similar to themselves.Heres the good news If the person who can help make your goals reality is someone you already know- and its likely he or she is- then do your research. What traits, behaviors, and interests do you share? What habits can you learn and adopt from him or her? Successful people know how to assimilate the environment they aspire to be in. (True story I started running because my boss is a marathoner.)Whats the first step to generate a plan? Business executives spend 90% of their time in meetings and answering emails. Set aside time to center your efforts on the people who matter. Find the one person who can help you accomplish a goal and create a plan on how to reach out to him or her.Related The Secrets to Turning Someone You Admire Into a Real-Life MentorA Anticipate RoadblocksA t the age of 20, Benjamin Franklin developed a plan aimed at achieving moral perfection. It included meditation, eating and drinking in moderation, and even avoiding sex. In his autobiography, Franklin explains that such a roadmap eventually contributed to his success as a politician, diplomat, and statesman. However, he also realized he needed a plan with enough flexibility to allow him to navigate any unexpected roadblocks. These adversities can be people, circumstances, or your own limiting beliefs. They can also be the tasks you have to complete to achieve a goal. Engaging a difficult task or other roadblock might not look like what you expect. For example, you might start by thinking positive. According to Mayo Clinic, positive thinking helps you cope with stressful situations- diminishing stresss harmful returns on the bodys health. So when youre up against a challenge, the best thing you can do might just be a good stretch and some deep breathing.I developed a simple mechanism to get back on track when I feel stressed. I drink two glasses of water and think about something pleasant. There are no special ingredients in the water, but by creating that routine, Ive built neural pathways that associate hydration with the feeling of well-being. Come up with your own coping mechanism for stressful situations, and youll be able to persevere.G Gain PersistenceEmmy-winning actor Jon Hamm only found success because of one lucky break- or at least it seemed that way. When director Matthew Weiner was looking for a new face who wouldnt command a high salary for his new show, Mad Men, he came across Hamm in an audition. Was that fortuitous? Yes, but before becoming Don Draper, Hamm spent years waiting and preparing for a big break, predominantly being cast as an extra. According to Hamm, he had a voice inside of him to tell him to keep going and not give up because his time would come. People who see themselves as lucky are also usually the ones who are prepared to ta ke the greatest risks that often pay off.Of course, chasing your dreams is hard work. Psychologists who study cognitive flexibility argue that youll avoid burnout by being open to the unexpected, even looking into discovering a new hobby. Whenever I feel like giving up, I do something unexpected, such as talking to a stranger or even doing push-ups by my desk. The break momentarily takes my mind off whats in front of me, but then gives me an extra boost to keep going.Look beyond your daily habits. Take risks, step outside the box, give yourself new inputs- otherwise, the outcome will be the same. As psychologist Ben Fletcher explains, Peoples lives can be absolutely transformed by being nudged along a slightly altered route. How do you gain persistence? When you feel like giving up, switch things up instead. Do something totally out of your wheelhouse- even if its unrelated to your goal. Are you struggling to get recognized at work? Learn how to cook a new recipe, change the route yo u take on your commute, try a new sport, or simply spend your lunch break with someone you havent met before.E Elevate YourselfFamous psychologist Abraham Maslow found that two of the most fundamental needs we have as human beings are the need to belong, and the need to be appreciated. If you apply the E.N.G.A.G.E algorithm, youll soon find yourself in a leadership position with the opportunity to meet these needs of other people. This may seem daunting, but becoming a leader who inspires people does not require grand gestures. Rather, it means paying attention, saying thank you, and recognizing the work others have done. A thoughtful compliment can go a long way toward inspiring others. Its no accident that Bill Clinton frequently acknowledges his high school band director for not only helping him grow as a saxophone player, but as a leader. Or that Ronald Reagan chose to write his touching open letter to the American people in 1994 after being diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. Or t hat President Obama, after reading Yann Martels book Life of Pi, sent Martel a thank you note praising his storytelling and powerful message.Ive found that helping students is a great way to elevate myself and those around me. Whenever someone in college contacts me, I always try to answer a question or make an introduction. Over the years, these students have become leaders in their own fields, now allowing me the opportunity to learn from them. How do you start elevating yourself? Start by acknowledging one person who helped you get where you are or who positively shaped your life. Showing respect inspires others and builds influence.E.N.G.A.G.E. will help you design experiences that promote successful thinking. However, the formula doesnt work unless you do. Your potential is there waiting to be discoveredThis article was originally published on Medium. Tips for Effective Regulatory Compliance Training

Tips for Effective Regulatory Compliance TrainingTips for Effective Regulatory Compliance TrainingIts hard to avoid a learning curve when it comes to finance-related regulatory compliance. Federal legislation rarely stays the same, meaning managers must make sure their finance and accounting teams (and all employees in some cases) are constantly on their toes to avoid penalties and added costs.Businesses may be aware of the basic tenets of certain regulations but fail to account for some of the lesser-known and often-overlooked aspects of a law, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). For example, most finance and accounting professionals know SOXcompliance requires verification of routine financial statements. However, details in the fine printmay apply to your business without you even realizing it.While most chief financial officers in a Robert Half Management Resources survey survey expressed confidence in their finance staff members regulatory expertise, organizations and their teams must avoid becoming complacent or falling into a false sense of security. One way managers can gain mora control over the compliance process is to invest in regulatory-related training. The following tips can help reduce the learning curve for accounting and finance teamsMake sure everyone is on boardConsider that everyone involved with compliance may not be on board with a training project initially. However, gaining buy-in is an essential step in making the initiative successful. Highlight to your employees how the program will help them in their jobs, and share your expectations, including learning objectives and the time that will be required of staff.Know your optionsCompliance training can take on a variety of forms. In addition to in-person sessions, many organizations offer online resources and certification programs that can more easily fit the schedules of busy employees. Choose a method that makes the most sense based on your organizations workload.Hire a project co nsultantStaff augmentation is another way to improve regulatory compliance training. By hiring a consultant who is familiar with regulatory issues, firms can give employees the opportunity to work with and learn from an expert who has years of experience helping companies. While the training process is more of an internal and ongoing one, a consultant can act as a valuable supplemental resource. Managers can get the most out of engagements with these professionals during the course of a project and afterward by making sure staff members gain the expertise and tools they need to complete future compliance projects on their own.Plan aheadDont put training off until the last minute. Regulatory compliance is a long-term process, and starting as early as possible will lead to a more successful program. The more time your business has to prepare, the lesserthe chance your firm ends up incurring penalties or other negative consequences. What has helped you conduct a successful regulatory com pliance training program? How to Negotiate Your Salary

How to Negotiate Your Salary How to Negotiate Your Salary Knowing how to negotiate your salary is an important skill for all workers as it maximizes the amount you can earn and improves your overall working conditions. There are a couple of things to keep in mind throughout the process: firstly, it is a two-way negotiation, and secondly, you are on the same team.Negotiations don’t have to be an aggressive exchange between two opponents. In fact, the best negotiations take place between people who are working together to achieve a common objective.Sometimes because of budget restraints, it is impossible for employers to raise basic salaries. In these cases, there are alternatives to negotiating the salary, bonuses, paid vacation time, perks, and your working schedule can all be negotiated.Although you shouldn’t be aggressive when looking to negotiate a salary offer, remember that you have the power to turn down it down. There are other jobs out there, having an online presence and keeping your professional resume up-to-date is an importa nt part of staying ahead of the game. Using an online resume builder is an effective tool. How to negotiate the salary for a new jobFollow these tips on how to effectively negotiate your salary to improve your chances of negotiating a better deal…Do your homeworkTake time to research how much someone with your skills and experience should be earning. Not knowing this information leaves you in a weak position to negotiate. Knowledge is power. Also make sure properly prepare for your job interview to maximize your chances of reaching the negotiation stage.Don’t make the first offerAvoid stating your salary expectations and let the employer make the first offer. If you’re asked to state your salary expectations, don’t give an actual figure if possible. Tell the employer that you’d like to know more about what the job entails before discussing the salary. If pushed give a wide salary range rather than a precise amount.Silence is your allyWhat to say when negotiating salary? Oft en nothing is the best option. It is often best to let the other side do the talking. When you receive an offer, no matter what it is, don’t rush to accept. Instead, remain silent for a period of time and look pensive. This is often enough to prompt an improved offer. At this stage, often during the second interview, the employer wants to employ you, even if you’re eager, keep your cool.Take your timeThe next move, once you’ve received a solid offer, is to say you need time to think it over. Sometimes, saying this you can get an immediate improvement on the original offer. Saying no can also raise the offer, but this is a risky move if you really want or need the job. Remember that the further you get in the recruitment process, the more time the company has invested, and the more committed they are to hiring you.Be flexibleIf for some reason, the company cannot move on the basic salary, there are other things you can negotiate. Ask for perks such as bonuses, a travel allowanc e, health insurance, more flexible hours, or extra paid vacation. Sometimes employers don’t want to raise your salary because of a rigid pay structure, or because they don’t want to create inequalities. However, in these cases, there are often other things they can budge on.How to negotiate a salary raiseHow to negotiate a salary increase is very similar to negotiating a pay package for a new job. Preparation is key. Gather as much information as you can about your own performance (such as recent appraisals), the pay policy of your company (know the limitations and constraints), as well as external information regarding how much someone with your professional experience should be earning. When to negotiate your salary? This will depend on how things work in each individual company but there are often natural opportunities to take advantage of and timing is key.If your contract needs renewal or you have been promoted you should always negotiate your salary. You can also use apprai sals, end of year reviews, and milestones (for example you’ve been there for 2 years) as windows of opportunity. If you feel you deserve a raise, and there isn’t an upcoming opportunity to enter negotiations, request a meeting with your boss to talk about salary. Then present your case calmly and don’t ask for an immediate response. This is a reasonable approach and at least you would have tried.

Netflix, Etsy and Adobe The best companies for the working dad

Netflix, Etsy and Adobe The best companies for the working dad Netflix, Etsy and Adobe The best companies for the working dad Parenting website Fatherly released  its list of “50 Best Places to Work for New Dads in 2017,” a yearly ranking of companies that are the most accommodating for men who have kids. The website  examined  and ranked some big U.S. companies based on six areas in which fathers are demanding good policies: “flexible time policies,” “parental support programs,” “paid leave,” “employee assistance programs,” “child care benefits and offerings,” and “dependent care.”Here are some highlights of the list and what the companies offered to get there. The top company for working dads: NetflixJust like on the 2016 list, everyone’s favorite binge-watching platform scooped the top spot again  this year- Netflix.Coming in at number one, the company boasts up to a whopping 52 weeks (read: a full year) of paid paternity leave (“hourly employees” get a generous 16). Parents can choose to come in or not work during that time “more or less as they please” - and still get paid. But as Fatherly later pointed out, even though the company also offers unlimited vacation days, time off doesn’t mean that slacking is encouraged. On the contrary, the company sounds highly competitive. As CNBC reported in 2016, “…internally, Netflix employees equate working there to playing on a pro sports team: If your impact is not up to snuff, you get replaced by a better player.”Coming in second for working dads: EtsyWith its headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, e-commerce website Etsy came in second place. Employees seeking parental leave can  take advantage of “a gender-blind 26 weeks of time off.” The company also has “parents’ rooms” featuring Etsy artwork and a garden on the roof in New York. But it looks like you don’t have to be a parent to take advantage of Etsy’s offerings.Business Insider reported in 2015 that for workers, both breakfast and lunch are free, there’s a “breathing room” that allows napping, they can take exercise classes “on-site,” and dogs are welcome.Let’s take a look at the companies that made the last two slots on the list - which means they’re still pretty good for working dads.AdobeComputer software company Adobe offers four weeks of paid paternity leave,  Ã¢€œup to $5,000 in adoption expenses,” “flexible hours,” the “Welcome Back program” allows managers and workers to create “an alternative work arrangement for up to 120 days after an employee takes an extended leave of three months or longer,” and more.Software engineer Edward Kandrot has reportedly worked for Microsoft, Google, Adobe, Facebook and Apple. He contrasted the company cultures of Facebook and Adobe in an interview, praising Adobe’s personal development programs.“…Adobe was all about individual growth. They have two weeks of classes per year they encourage you to take from a vast catalog of useful categories like conflict resolution, career planning or about the latest technologies,” Kandrot told CN BC.Fannie MaeFannie Mae completed  the list.  Fatherly alluded to the financial controversies that have surrounded the company before, but pointed out that the mortgage guarantor provides four  weeks of paid paternity leave, “on-site childcare,” a “dependent care reimbursement program” if you can’t take your child along, and “the Flexible Work Arrangement program.”Dads juggle work-family conflict tooThere’s likely to be more demand for flexible policies for working parents because there is also an increasing amount of pressure for men to keep up  demands at work and home. The Center for American Progress reported in 2015 that…“the National Study of the Changing Workforce- a 30-year long study from the Families and Work Institute- found that between 1977 and 2008, the percentage of mothers in dual-earner couples who reported work-family conflict grew slightly from 41 percent to 47 percent, while the percentage of fathers who reported work-family conflict grew signi ficantly more from 35 percent to 60 percent.”Those are the kinds of numbers few companies can afford to ignore.

Sports Programs in the US Navy

Sports Programs in the US Navy Sports Programs in the US Navy Sailors with the athletic skills to compete at the national level in a team or individual sports have the chance to represent the Navy at higher level athletic competitions through the Navy Sports program. “The Navy Sports program is an opportunity for active-duty Sailors and selected Reservists to participate in a higher level of sports that goes beyond the base intramural program,” explained John Hickok, head of the Navy Sports program for the Navy’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Division. “Because the All-Navy sports teams advance to a national championship event or world military event, we are looking for Sailors with solid athletic achievements who can compete at the national level. Typically, this is someone who has been a state champion in high school or has competed in college,” he said. The All-Navy teams participate in the Department of Defense Sports Program and compete in the Armed Forces Sports Championships against teams from the Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force. Following an inter-service competition, the very best Navy athletes may be selected to compete as members of the All-Armed Forces Team and go on to the Military World Games, and national and international competitions. The Navy Sports Program also allows people who participate in activities that are not normally offered on a base, such as rowing, archery, and shooting, to compete at a high level. “If a Navy athlete is good enough to challenge the very best in the nation, then they can be given the opportunity through the Navy Sports Program to train and compete for a chance to represent the United States in the Olympics,” said Hickok. Since the 1952 Olympic Games, 107 Navy athletes have represented the United States in the Olympics, winning 22 gold medals, six silver medals, and six bronze medals. “There’s a great value to the Navy in allowing Sailors to participate in not only the Navy Sports Program, but other MWR opportunities. It’s another chance for a Sailor to excel. Plus, it’s all about teamwork and being well rounded, and camaraderiequalities you look for in a warrior,” said Hickok. The Navy Sports Program also provides community outreach. “When we take a Navy team to a training camp, we always make an effort to contact the local recruiters and bring in high school students that compete in a particular sport and hold a clinic for them,” said Hickok. “It gives the students a chance to talk to some outstanding role models in our Navy athletes, who come from various enlisted and officer communities, anything from culinary specialists to pilots and doctors.” The Navy Sports Program fields All-Navy teams in boxing, bowling, cross country, wrestling, basketball, soccer, triathlon, volleyball, softball, golf, rugby, and marathon. Also, Armed Forces teams are selected to compete in national and international competition in the following sports: taekwondo, naval pentathlon, shooting, sailing, cycling, track and field, and judo. Training camps for All-Navy team sports are generally two to three weeks, while camps for individual sports vary. Still, other sports, such as the marathon, cross-country, and triathlon, don’t have a training camp  because there’s an abundance of races in the local community that athletes can compete in year-round. Sailors who are interested in participating in the Navy Sports Program or serving as coaches are encouraged first to contact their base athletic director to obtain a Navy Sports application and fill out the application completely. Sailors will not be selected without the approval of their commanding officer. The completed application should be faxed to the Navy Sports Office at 901-874-6831. Applications may also be mailed to: Navy Sports Office,PERS-651E,5720 Integrity Drive,Building 457,Millington, TN, 38054-6510. “After the application has been approved by the chain of command, the information and references will be checked by the Navy Sports Program staff,” explained Hickok. “About two weeks before the training camp starts, we’ll announce who has been selected to attend and will send a letter to the command requesting that the command issue no-cost TAD [temporary assigned duty] orders. Once that’s done, then the Navy Sports Office will arrange for transportation and provide the individual with an e-ticket. Sailors will be berthed on base.” Applications are due no later than 30 days before training camp begins. Applications are due 30 days before the Armed Forces Championship begins for sports without training camps. For the complete sports schedule and more information, including the Navy Sports application, please visit the Navy Sports Web site at ?navyfitness.org/all-navy-sports or call the Navy Sports Office at 901-874-6632/DSN 882.?

How to Effectively Stay Motivated When Unable to Find a Job

How to Effectively Stay Motivated When Unable to Find a Job How to Effectively Stay Motivated When Unable to Find a Job It’s never the best feeling in the world when you lose a job and have a hard time finding a new one. However, that doesn’t mean it’s time to give up. In fact, it means that now is the time to work harder than ever. Here’s how to effectively stay motivated when you’re unable to find a new job. You never want to be constantly dwelling on the past, and the “what you could have done” loop. Instead, you should be focusing on your future and what you plan to do. This way, you can start planning on how you’re going to bring in money now and how you’re going to get your next job . Focusing on the future will help you get a new job much faster than concentrating on the past and any mistakes you may have made. Unemployment doesn’t affect just you, it affects your entire family as well. Instead of keeping the problem to yourself, ask for support from your friends and family members. Keeping your unemployment a secret will only hurt the ones you love. Your support group will help you get through this awful part of your career and propel you forward. Remember, keep everyone in your life updates with your status and tell them how else they can support you. Although unemployment feels the worst, you shouldn’t take the job loss too personally or you may lose all motivation to get a new job. Only you can define who you are, not where you work, or whether you’re employed or not. Plus, potential employers are more likely to employ someone that’s positive, even after a job loss. Instead of allowing yourself to feel negatively about your job loss, stay positive! You can. do this by listing everything you did well at your recent job and use it to keep yourself positive while looking for a new job. This can help boost your confidence and feel even better going into your next job. If you need it, you can give yourself a week or two to relax before jumping into the job search . However, you don’t want to wait too long, otherwise, it will be hard to get back into your regular routine. Try to structure your day and treat your job search like your new job. Plan out your day and set goals for yourself to stay on track with your goals. Before you can begin applying for jobs, you will need to update your resume and improve your personal branding. Include your most recent work experience on your resume and update your skills and responsibilities. Be sure to tailor your resume to the new position you are looking for. You should also work on improving your LinkedIn profile, which is crucial to your personal and professional branding. An optimized LinkedIn profile will improve your credibility and boost visibility. All this combined can help you to quickly land a job that meets your needs. When you’re unemployed, the strength of your professional network can make a huge difference in your job search.  In today’s time, most open positions are filled by people tapping their network, not searching on job boards. In fact, most jobs are not advertised at all and are filled by word of mouth. The more people you know who know you are looking for a new job, the better off you will be. Reach out to people you know and people you used to work with and let them know about your job search. You never know who may be able to help you out. This is an important and often forgotten part of the job search process. After you update your resume , submit your application , and go to the interview , you must follow up afterward. Send an email or thank you note saying how much you enjoyed meeting with them and thanking them for the opportunity. This will let them know that you are serious about the position and you are invested in the company. It’s important to stay motivated when you’re unable to find a job. Being unemployed isn’t an ideal way to live, but sooner rather than later, you’re going to be employed to a new, great job and stream of income. Losing a job can impact people in different ways, but it’s important to keep your tips and stay motivated when searching for a new job. SAMPLE Networking Contacts Spreadsheet for Your Job Search!

SAMPLE Networking Contacts Spreadsheet for Your Job Search! SAMPLE Networking Contacts Spreadsheet for Your Job Search! One of my coaching clients recently moved to a new city. Now, even more than ever, she realizes the importance of networking to help increase her chances of finding a job especially since she is looking for opportunities in a specialized field in which she has little direct experience. This is exactly where networking contacts help open doors! But after a few months both before and after her move, shes contacted a lot of people and is having trouble keeping track of whom she followed up with, whom she still needs to follow up with, and the individual details related to each person she is trying to build an ongoing relationship with.So where was she finding networking contacts? Before we get to her solution, you might be wondering how she was finding people to connect with. She filled me in on all the things shed been doing, including:attending a local conference related to her interestfinding alumni working in that fieldpursuing names she was given or found online using LinkedIn, etc .continuing to look for new potential networking alliesfollowing up with contacts by providing updates of her progress Meanwhile, she was applying for jobs even somewhat related to her goal (big goals may start with small wins). Plus she got certified for a credential that would open up more job possibilities. (Great also to talk about when networking and in interviews, because it shows you are determined.)Also, wherever possible, she scouted out contacts that worked in companies she was applying to or people who might know someone there. Plus she dug deep to find names through people she met as part of her certificate process, and also related organizations. You never know which one will get you to where you want to go, so get creative about where you look for names.Remember that networking contacts can be found anywhere, even grocery lines and barbecues (where I found a great one once). This is an out of date hack for lowering your stress

This is an out of date hack for lowering your stress This is an out of date hack for lowering your stress A small shift in your view of “stress” could make a huge difference in your lifeline. In 2012, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison performed a fascinating study on stress with about 28,000 people. The study found that having a lot of stress was not linked with premature death. But … having a combo of a lot of stress â€" and also having a belief system that it was hurting your health â€" increased risk of premature death by 43%.The Inside Scoop:Three different groups of people were asked to talk in front of a group of unfriendly evaluators, followed by a tricky word test. Before this plotted stress test started … The first group was told to play video games. The second group was taught to ignore stressful thoughts. The third group was given some unusual info about the benefits of stress. They were told how the body’s “stress response” evolved to help people succeed â€" and that stress’ symptoms (higher heart rate, faster breathing and internal jitters) were all tools for making you stronger, faster, smarter, better. The third group â€" which learned to “bless their stress”    Ã¢€" did far better on the stress test.      They gave better speeches and were rated as more confident. Plus their “physiological indicators” showed that they were also managing their stress response far better than the other 2 groups. Your assignment: Stop thinking: Stress is increasing my risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack. Start thinking: Stress is helping my heart to work harder. Plus it’s speeding up my breathing so more oxygen gets to my brain and I can thereby think more clearly. The above is an excerpt from the bestselling longevity, “Life is Long: 50+ways to live a little closer to forever,”  by Karen Salmansohn, founder of NotSalmon.com.

4 Things Employers Look For In Resumes

4 Things Employers Look For In Resumes 4 Things Employers Look For In Resumes After being at your first entry-level job for over a year, you’re ready for change. You feel like you’ve stopped growing in your current position and determined a new job would be the best way to advance your career. One day, you get home from work and turn on your laptop. You pull up the latest version of your resume and realize it hasn’t been updated since you started your current position. Shocked (and slightly overwhelmed), you notice this resume doesn’t reflect your new address, accomplishments from your current job, or recent community involvement. As you begin to make edits to your resume , you start to wonder, “Where do I even start?” When updating your resume (or even starting from scratch), think with the employer in mind. A March 2014 CareerBuilder survey of about 2,200 hiring managers discovered one in six respondents spend 30 seconds or less reviewing resumes. The harsh truth is you don’t have much time to impress employers. Hiring managers only care about the value you have to offer as a candidate. Here are four things employers will notice immediately when they read your resume : First and foremost, employers want to know if you’re qualified for the job. Hiring managers spend most of their time skimming through resumes to identify keywords that match the job description. Each time you apply for a job, carefully dissect the job posting. Create a list of skills, knowledge, and experience required for the position that match your experience. After you’ve created a list, identify the strongest matches. These will be the keywords you’ll use throughout your resume. Employers don’t expect candidates to possess every skill they desire, which is why hiring managers are on the look-out for exaggerated resumes . According to a  Careerbuilder study of about 2,000 hiring managers, 57 percent of respondents said the most common lie they catch on a resume is an embellished skill set. As you write your resume, be careful not to include keywords, skills, or experience that don’t genuinely reflect your abilities as a professional. To avoid this mistake, include supporting accomplishment stories with each position. Hiring managers want to read resumes that tell a story about a candidate’s career. This story helps them identify the reason why you’re applying for the position and whether you’d make a good fit. Make sure your resume outlines the key responsibilities you’ve held in each position and how they’ve contributed to your overall career success. Your job titles should also give the employer an idea of the type of experience you’ve had over time. 4.   Personal brand and online presence. Hiring managers want to see your personal web presence because it gives them the opportunity to learn more about you as a candidate. Jobvite’s 2014 Social Recruiting Survey found 73 percent of employers have hired a candidate through social media. Include links to your personal domain or online portfolio, Twitter handle, and a link to your LinkedIn profile. This will make it easier for employers to learn about how you add value to your industry and have created a professional voice online. While this might seem like a lot, many hiring managers will digest this information in 30 seconds or less. By following these tips, you’ll create a stand-out resume that will get you noticed by employers in a positive way.
